Capon Springs & Farms celebrates 85 years!

In 1932, Lou & Virginia Austin bought an abandoned resort property in Capon Springs for it’s healing water supply. It has become a treasured hidden gem for families, couples, individuals and groups looking to relax, renew and recharge. Into four generations of family, guests and co-workers, Capon has grown relationships that have stood the test of time. As it did during the “golden era” of the 19th century, Capon Springs water still provides the “life blood” of the entire property. As it naturally flows from its deep underground aquifer into pipes and reservoirs, the water supplies all the lodging, dining and recreation needs of the guests.

During its 85-year history, Capon Springs & Farms has continued to preserve the character of a kinder, gentler era where guests can slow down, recharge and reconnect with their families and friends. After being resurrected at the depth of the depression, Capon served as a word of mouth escape for friends and friends of friends. In the 1930s, the golf course and tennis courts were built allowing for more recreation. During the second World War, when gasoline rationing allowed only a day’s drive, Capon was conveniently reachable from Washington, DC. During this time, traditions enjoyed today were developed: music in the trees, flag raising ceremonies, front porch pre-dinner snacks. In the 1950s, the Meeting House and Teen Age Corner/ping pong house were both added.

Over the next decade, the 2nd generation took over the operation and added cottages on the hill, Bingo and another shuffleboard court. In the 1970s, a new Sunset Lodge was built and hiking trails were added. Over the next twenty years, steady renovations of every lodging facility took place as the third generation took the helm. Just after the new millennium, a bandstand and the Hygeia Bath House & Spa were added. More recently, the Main House has seen major upgrades including brand new handicapped-accessible rooms.

Today, as Capon preserves its heritage as an oasis from the outside world, it continues to add to the guest experience with live entertainment and new sports like Frisbee golf, Pickleball and now FlingGolf. With a renewed effort to enhance its traditional “farm to table” experience thanks to fourth generation family member Sam Brill, 2017 will bring additional experiences by enjoying Capon food products both while on vacation and to take home. Whether you have been a multi-generational guest or traveling to Capon for the first time, we will welcome you like “you are coming home.”

To celebrate the historic milestone of 85 years, the extended Capon family will be having a Community Open House, Sunday April 23rd, from 1-6 pm. Neighbors are invited to come explore and enjoy the facilities. Take a history tour and get an update from the family on the latest happenings. Bluegrass music and light refreshments will be provided. Click here for more details including how to make advanced reservations for golf, spa and dinner. Want to spend more than a few hours? Come for the May 19-21 weekend where you will not only get more insights into the unique Capon history, but the farm enhancements and new Golf pro will be introduced. An evening event is planned for the actual date on July 9th.

Capon Springs is grateful and thrilled to share their 85th anniversary season with you. Let the fun begin!
