Enjoy the Global Crossroads Multicultural Festival during your visit, happening on October 27! A multicultural festival that celebrates music, food, education, and culture, this free event is perfect for families and a wonderful introduction to the many cultures that can be found in southern Indiana. ResortsandLodges.com had a chance to sit down with the Community Engagement Manager of the University of Southern Indiana, Erin Merris, to talk more about the festival.

RAL: Tell us a little bit about the event.

EM: The University of Southern Indiana and Historic New Harmony host the annual Global Crossroads Multicultural Festival in hopes to build a collaborative region. The festival celebrates food, music, education and culture from all over the globe. This free day-long festival in New Harmony, Indiana will highlight the diverse cultures that make up southwest Indiana.

RAL: What demographic does your event attract?

EM: This festival is for all ages and is family friendly. There are a lot of activities that are attractive to individuals of all ages.

RAL: What makes this event unique?

EM: This event celebrates diversity through education and involvement. Members of the local international community and our international students at the University of Southern Indiana share their cultures through food, dance, and global mission work. Many of the students here studying from abroad are just as excited to share their traditions with Americans as they are to learn about American culture. The goal of this festival is to celebrate the diversity of our region and help to provide a platform to educate and engage different groups in hopes of building a better, more inclusive community.

RAL: What activities will be at the festival?

EM: There are going to be a wide variety of activities aimed at fostering connections in the community! We’ll be having DJ’s and dance performances, small theater shows, plenty of food vendors, a fair-trade market, a Tai Chi interactive demonstration, and a gospel choir!

RAL: What does the event mean to the community?

EM: New Harmony, Indiana, located on the banks of the Wabash River, is an experience like no other. A community that began over 200 years ahead of its time, New Harmony was first a spiritual sanctuary that later became a haven for international scientists, scholars, and educators who sought equality in communal living. This event continues the traditions the town was founded on and encourages the idea of building community through education.

RAL: Does the event support a special cause in the community?

EM: While the local businesses see increased revenue, the event is about the community. The event helps promote global missions that are supported locally.

RAL: Why should people come to your event?

EM: New Harmony is a wonderful getaway for people of all ages as well as families. The charming little town offers many unique buildings, parks,  trails, shops and restaurants. Come spend the weekend, enjoy the festival and all this wonderful historic community has to offer.
