Communicating in a foreign language as a non-native speaker is difficult enough – we couldn’t imagine what we would face at a Mexican spa resort with a French name! Of course, all turned out well at our No. 1 spa resort and we can now comfortably interchange “sí” and “oui oui.”

Le Blanc Spa Resort is situated on a secluded stretch of white sand beach a mere 15 minutes from downtown Cancun. Though we love the bustle of nighttime Cancun when the stars seem to fall from the sky and land atop night clubs, we were looking for a more tranquil setting and the Le Blanc Spa provides just that. Taking after its title, the spa cloaks itself in white marble, accented by rich wood furnishings. A healing element unto itself, water is a prominent feature throughout. When you first arrive, experience the Le Blanc Water Journey. This guided hydrotherapy routine involves rejuvenating showers, a detoxifying herbal steam, immersion in a cool or warm lagoon and a traditional shower. Then, relax and travel back to that first garden of paradise with the Eden Package. A honey body scrub, seaweed wrap and serenity massage combine to restore inner and outer peace.

Getting there

Just the mere sight of Maya Tulum Beach had us swept away – and not by any sort of tidal wave. Quite the opposite, it was below the water that our eyes grew wide with amazement inside our goggles. Beneath the surface is the world’s second longest reef that stretches from Quintana Roo to Honduras.

Suffice it to say, it took a while to drag us off the beautiful Yucatan Peninsula beach and into our No. 7 spot – but leaving those baby blue waves for Maya Tulum’s Wellness Spa was no regret. Don’t be frightened by the title – the Neurosedative Massage doesn’t put your brain cells to sleep as much as it provides a restful 80-minute wake. Designed to alleviate the overwhelming feelings of stress and fatigue, this slow and rhythmic full body massage decongests the lymphatic system and calms the nervous system. Feel renewed in energy and tranquility with the Maya Kaaten Kuxtal specialty. Translated as “Mayan Rebirthing,” this treatment uses agave plant extracts, lime, lemon, aloe vera, cacao and honey for a gentle exfoliation. After a purifying mud mask and warm shower, a lymphatic drainage massage with natural oils rounds out this anti-stress and revitalizing experience.

Getting there

From Cancun International Airport, take 307 South and drive for about 81 miles. At a stoplight, you will see a sign for COBA and Chichen Itza on the right. Turn left at this light. If you enter the town of Tulum, you have gone too far. Go approximately 1.5 miles until you come to a T-intersection with a police hut on the left. Turn right and travel straight until the paved road ends. Maya Tulum Resort is the first place on the left after the police check point.
