Tried. True. Terrific. Our No. 7 pick, Aspen Square Condominium Hotel, has proven through meticulous detail and service that it is a Colorado gem of mountain luxury on and off the slopes.

Aspen Square has one of its best features right in the title: their condominiums. It will be difficult to rouse yourself from sleep and leave your suite with a corner wood-burning fireplace, lavish seating area and windows with mountain and city views. All rooms are wrapped in a contemporary but rustic mountain ambiance with modern touches like abstract art contrasted with classic pieces like an antler chandelier. As you venture past your door, you’ll continue to be impressed. Melt in the warmth of the heated outdoor pool or hot tub while all around you is a cold white blanket of snow and ice. Use one lift pass to access all four Aspen mountains and to explore the total of more than 5,300 acres that will test your skill as a skier and snowboarder. Aspen Square has calculated that The Silver Queen Gondola, which brings you to the peaks of Aspen Mountain, is a convenient 64 steps away from Aspen Square, even in ski boots!

Your beginner’s knees are knocking together from the heights of Buttermilk Mountain. The skiers in ESPN’s Winter X Games just make this look so easy! How will you find inspiration to begin your downward descent? Then, you remember what awaits you at the bottom: Aspen Meadows Resort.

Our No. 2 may not be as elevated as the famous Aspen mountains surrounding it, but it still ranks in the highest of classes. Located in a valley and built with the intention of integrating environment, culture and community, this Bauhaus-style resort does just that. Feel harmonized with the Colorado landscape in rooms with snow-white sheets, windows for walls and stunning mountain, courtyard and river views. The only difference outside is the lack of climate control. But with the fresh snow beneath your skis, you’ll forget all but the Colorado beauty as you cross three valleys, past woods and over meadows on the Owl Creek Trail. If the challenges of Aspen Highlands don’t test you, exercise your arm muscles – and your courage – and try ice climbing! No matter what your pleasure by day, you’ll be more than pleased to return to Aspen Meadows and to your private balcony, study area and bed.

We’ve heard our share of beautiful names – Sophia, Cecilia and Amelia to name a few – but none rings sweeter in Aspen, CO than Annabelle. Our No. 4 pick has a reputation that precedes its name. Originally the Christmas Inn, Annabelle Inn has been serving style, comfort and convenience since 1948.

In the spirit of a vintage European ski lodge, Annabelle’s interior is as charming as the snow draped pine trees and Rockies outside. Sleep in the Spruce Room with a vine-like bed frame that twists towards the ceiling, the Terrace Room with twist furniture and quilted bedspread or the simple but elegant, cream colored Norway Room. Don’t worry about reaching those mountains in the distance; a free shuttle stops at Annabelle to take you to the foot of the famous four: Aspen Mountain, Aspen Highlands, Buttermilk and Snowmass. If you simply can’t get enough of the slopes – when you return to Annabelle Inn, relax in the hot tub. That’s right, you heard us. Relax in the upper hot tub and pick up some skiing tips from the ski videos playing during the evening. Or, really relax and just enjoy the views of the Aspen and Red Mountains.

Getting there

In the winter Independence Pass is closed. So, if you are traveling to Aspen from Denver, take I-70 West to Glenwood Springs. Then, take CO Route 82 West. Route 82 becomes Main Street in Aspen. Annabelle Inn is on the corner of Second and Main on the left-hand side.

You enter a brass chandeliered lobby with a massive mirror above a marble fireplace surrounded by plush Victorian-era chairs. Gold framed black and white photographs hang on rose colored walls and you feel as though you’ve entered a world of elegance and grace.

That world would be the Hotel Jerome that heralds back in style to its beginning era of 1889. Claiming its title as the crown jewel of Aspen, Jerome’s stately brick exterior and sophisticated interior certainly do remind us of historic European luxury. As a Colorado boutique hotel, Jerome offers guests special privileges such as access to Aspen Club and Spa and a chauffer service to it. But not forgetting its (literally) biggest attraction, Aspen Mountain, Jerome also provides complimentary transportation to the base of the mountain as well as on-mountain ski storage. Rooms are individually decorated but all are chic and appointed with feather pillows, 300-thread-count sheets and a bathroom with an oversized tub. Hotel Jerome is very conscious of incorporating and respecting its environment, which is why it believes in water and energy conservation and sustainable cuisine. The executive chef at Jerome uses fresh ingredients that are as local as possible.
