Fish may travel in teeming schools, but you certainly don’t want to feel crowded on your BC fishing trip. That’s why we fell in love with our No. 1 spot, Blackfish Lodge, set within the lush and secluded Great Bear Rainforest preserve on Baker Island!

No matter what type of fish you decide to go after and no matter which method you use, Blackfish Lodge has prime locations that will make the rest of the world seem far away. Fly-fish in the Wakeman River for steelhead, salmon, trout or dollies. When you’re tired of fly-fishing, try fly-in fishing. Float plane or helicopter charters take you to remote lakes and rivers so that you can chase those fish even further! If you’re looking for more of an aquatic thrill, try catching a cutthroat salmon, native to this region. And if salmon doesn’t really tickle your taste buds, cast your line for halibut, lingcod or snapper. After sitting in a boat all day, it’s more than comforting to come back to the Blackfish Lodge. Framed by the Coast Range Mountains, floating on the water and made of red and yellow cedar, the lodge blends into its surroundings, creating a harmonious and peaceful ambiance.

Related activities

Blackfish Lodge is also your ideal Orca whale spotting destination. The surrounding Blackfish Sound, Johnstone Strait, Knight Inlet and Kingcome Inlet are famous for their concentration of these massively beautiful creatures.

Getting there

From Vancouver, travel to either Tsawwassen, which is south of Vancouver, or Horseshoe Bay, northwest of Vancouver. A born and raised Vancouver Island native addicted to catching Coho and Chinook; a true “Tofitian” with an unmatched ambition to catch anything from cod to sea cucumbers; or a walking encyclopedia of bird and sea creature knowledge. They all like long hours perusing the waters of Clayoquot Sound.

That’s not Tofino, Vancouver Island dating ads – it’s the lineup of guides at our No. 6 spot, Weigh West Marine Resort. The word “west” has never had a more pleasant ring to it than when referring to Weigh West in the Weigh West Marina on the west side of Vancouver Island. In this specific location, overjoyed anglers will find premier BC bottom fishing grounds. Take a chartered fishing voyage with a Weigh West guide out onto Clayoquot Sound. We were amazed to hear that here, Chinook salmon that can get up to 30 lbs. and halibut can reach a whopping 70 lbs.! Saltwater fly-fishing also got us pretty excited due to bait like herring, needlefish and anchovies gathering in the shallows, which then draws the Coho, Chinook and Cutthroat salmon straight to you. And you can keep appreciating the stunning BC view from your cozy lake view suite!

Highlights

Weigh West Marine is a full-service marina with shower and laundry facilities and is located in Browning Passage, which is sheltered from the blustering winds and surf of the Pacific Ocean.
