Like something from the very pages of Lucy Maud Montgomery’s Anne of Green Gables novels, The Great George proudly stands as the No.1 PEI hotel on our beloved list. The cluster of 15 lovingly restored buildings grace Charlottetown’s Great George Street National Historic District.

The fact that The Great George is made up of several award-winning heritage buildings definitely had something do with winning our hearts. How could it not? Each unique building lends a glance into yesteryear; a time when instead of looking out the window and seeing a mini-van curbside, a whinnying horse was pulling a buggy of cloak-clad Canadians down a dirt road. While the architecture is much the same as it was a hundred years ago, most of the décor adds a contemporary twist, and some of the suites are truly revolutionary. The Perkins Suite, for instance, is set in a circa 1843 building, yet the ultramodern amenities are definitely from another lifetime. An oversized marble steamroom with an open air shower gives way to an opulent room featuring a luxe double Jacuzzi. And after a bathing experience fit for a king, you can cool off on the private rooftop deck overlooking the glittering Charlottetown streetscape.

Our No. 2 selection may not boast 1800s architecture, but that doesn’t mean Delta Prince Edward Island is any less charming. Set in the heart of Olde Charlottetown, this prestigious hotel is just steps from the clusters of shops at Peake’s Wharf – one of the city’s most scenic places!

Whether you’re staying for a night or an entire week, one thing’s for certain – you won’t be disappointed by this Delta dynasty. And you won’t want to miss a chance to gallivant down the boardwalk at Confederation Landing Park, either. There’s a reason why Best Western Charlottetown is on our list of Top 10 Prince Edward Island Resorts. Of course it has something to do with this booming hotel chain’s successful reputation for its hospitality. But when we heard it was right by Peakes Quay, we added this hotel to the list in a snap!

Is it bad that we were practically jumping for joy when we heard that Best Western Charlottetown was within walking distance to one of the tastiest lobster dinners on PEI? Nah, and you’re going to be begging for a bib once you get a load of that one pound lobster, steamed and garnished with all the fixins’. After your chin – and shirt! – have sufficiently been doused with butter and your belly’s about to burst, roll on down to the waterfront and enjoy PEI’s largest outdoor patio overlooking the marina. After you’ve slept off that succulent seafood dinner in your spacious guestroom or suite, head down to the lobby for a complimentary continental breakfast before a dip in the pool, or Day 2 of your Charlottetown exploration. The Province House and the Confederation Center are just minutes away!

If you’ve seen the Anne of Green Gables movies or the Road to Avonlea TV series, then Dalvay By-The-Sea will look very familiar to you. Known as the White Sands Hotel in these productions, it’s easy to see why this historic Cavendish haven was chosen for film – and as our No. 5 list selection!

We adored it on TV when Sullivan Entertainment Inc. included Dalvay By-the-Sea in its 1990s series based off of Lucy Maud Montgomery’s side characters in Anne of Green Gables. But once we saw this picturesque PEI place in the flesh – err, mortar – we were head-over-heels in love. A true seaside example of 1890s architecture, this hotel was once owned by Alexander MacDonald - a wealthy businessman and one-time president of Standard Oil Company with John D. Rockefeller. While we won’t go into the long history it holds as it had been passed down to MacDonald’s granddaughters and then other PEI dwellers, we wills say this: one look at the hotel while you walk along the warm sands and rising dunes of Dalvay Beach, and you’ll be hooked. Dalvay By-The-Sea is truly for the romantics at heart.

Fun facts

Dalvay By-The-Sea was built in 1895.

Related Onsite Offerings

Dalvay By-The-Sea holds 26 guestrooms, all largely furnished in period antiques as well as a four-piece private bath.

Highlights

For your ultimate relaxation, there are no televisions, radios, or even telephones in Dalvay-By-The-Sea guestrooms.
