New York may not afford travelers the luxury of being able to play golf 365 days per year, but what it lacks in length of playing season, it more than makes up for in history and tradition. Shinnecock Hills Golf Club, located in Southampton, is considered by many to be the oldest formal organized golf club in the United States (1891), and also claims to have the oldest clubhouse (1892) in the country and was the first to admit women (it did so from the start). It has also hosted four U.S. Open Championships in three different centuries and is scheduled to host the event again in 2018. The East Course of Oak Hill Country Club, located in Rochester, has hosted the PGA Championship three times, and the state of New York has hosted the event 12 times. Winged Foot in Mamaronek has hosted the U.S. Open (5 times), the U.S. Women’s Open (twice), the U.S. Amateur Championship (twice), as well as the U.S. Senior Open and the PGA Championship. Plus, Bethpage State Park offers travelers one of the toughest public golf layouts in the world with it’s Black Course, and has also hosted the national championship twice since 2000 (2002 and 2009).
