Deep Creek Lake's history dates back to over 80 years ago, when plans to harness the water powers of the lake and Youghiogheny River for the production of electricity were created. The plans started in 1908 but it wasn't until 1921 that the Youghiogheny Hydro-Electric Corporation were able to start building dams across the waters. The original concept included the construction of four dams and three power houses, but in the end only one dam, the Deep Creek dam, was built. The plant opened for operation in 1925 and remains as it was back then even now. The dam is about 1,340 feet long and crosses Deep Creek about 1.75 miles upstream from the Youghiogheny. A 7,000 foot power tunnel transports the water to the powerhouse, which produces about 18 megawatts of electric power. Today, Deep Creek is managed by the Department of Natural Resources and is Maryland's largest freshwater lake!
