The Lodge lies between the Wild River and the Andorscoggin River, and is literally at the gateway to the White Mountain National Forest, with hiking trails, swimming holes, spectacular views, lakes, and the Mt. Washington Auto Road only minutes away.
The resort was first established in 1938 as a stopping point on one of the nation's first auto roads through the White Mountain National Forest. Route 113 was built by the Civilian Conservation Corps during the Great Depression, and by 1936 the "wheel road" from Cold River valley to Gilead and the Androscoggin river valley was finally completed. Motorists came to see some of the most impressive views in the White Mountains: giant cliffs, velvety tops of virgin soft woods, and remarkable rock formations.
Cabins vary from Cabin 9, a mini-cabin with two rooms, to the Long House, with 7. Stay in knotty pine interiors, screened porches, eat-in kitchens, and country quilted-beds with antique door headboards. Visit the Great Room, a gathering spot for group meals, parties, and relaxation, with a field-stone fireplace, buffet table, kitchen, and small bedroom with private bath and shower.
