Anchor Point has a rich history that dates back to when it was once the home to the semi-nomadic Kenaitze Indians who called the area Qasmatchin. It wasn't until May 1778, when Captain James Cook anchored his ship in the inlet during a rough storm, which ultimately resulted in the kedge anchor to eventually be lost. Cook marked this spot where he lost his anchor as "Anchor Point," and the name stuck. The town has seen various travelers, European explorers, gold miners, and fur traders make their way through the 18th and 19th centuries. Today, Anchor Point's history remains in old structures such as the Anchor Point Bridge that spans the Anchor River.
