At the heart of Buckinghamshire lies Hartwell House, a stately home which combines the vigour of the 17th-century with the classicism of the 18th-century. Once the home of General Robert E. Lee's ancestors, and the residence in exile of Louis XVIII, it is a noble property with 90 acres of parkland. Inside are drawing rooms with striking plasterwork and fine paintings, whilst a Jacobean staircase with carved figures leads to sumptuous bedrooms with marble bathrooms.
