St. Eugene Golf Resort & Casino has a rich history that dates back to the 1800s. The area around the resort was occupied by the Ktunaxa (pronounced “k-too-nah-ha”) people for over 10,000 years, and their traditional territory now includes much of southeastern British Columbia. Back in 1873, the Oblate Order founded the first mission near the resort's current location and served as a school, residence, and also a hospital. In 1893, a Ktunaxa First Nations member named Pierre discovered a rich ore body, which was then used to finance new mission buildings and the St. Eugene Church in 1897. The St. Eugene Mine produced over $10 million in ore within the next ten years, and by 1910, the Canadian government funded and built the St. Eugene Mission School, which currently is part of St. Eugene's resort complex. The school served 5,000 children from the Ktunaxa, Okanagan, Shuswap, and Blackfoot Nations until it was closed in 1970. In 1973, the school was meant to be transformed into a psychiatric care facility but the project was abandoned, and after suffering severe flooding damages, the building remained empty for 20 years until plans for the St. Eugene Resort began taking shape. In an effort to reclaim the Ktunaxa heritage, former Chief Sophie Pierre led the transformation to the St. Eugene's you see today. The golf course opened in 2000, then the casino in 2002, followed by the hotel itself in 2003. Today, St. Eugene's is the only project in Canada where a First Nation has restored and reclaimed a part of its past as a place for new generations to learn and enjoy.
