Surrounded by ocean waves and serene beaches, it is no surprise that Cape Cod is a shellfish haven. Therefore, it is only fitting that come mid-October, the Wellfleet Shellfish Promotion and Tasting (SPAT) hosts the Wellfleet Oysterfest. The 13th annual festival is a two-day event in which the non-profit event strives to provide the community and its visitors with a greater understanding of shellfish, the industry, and their eco-importance.
- October 19th and 20th, 2013 from 10am to 5pm
- Admission is $5 for a one daly pass, $8 for a two day pass; children under 12 are free; cash only
- Wellfleet, Cape Cod, Massachusetts
Oysterfest entertains with a wealth of shellfish education, tricks, and tastes. The “Taste the Terrior and the Merroir” seminar presents fun facts about the area’s sea dwellers as well as harvested samples. A stroll through the Main Street Festival is where you’ll devour traditional festival fare as well as hometown favorites including raw bar venders where local, wild stock is served. Of course, arts, crafts, and educational booths line one after another filled with treasures. However, if you’re interested in a bit more of an active Oysterfest experience, there’s much in store for you. The event that is sure to draw the crowds year after year is the Oyster Shuck Off. Twenty-four oysters await their shucking as competitors race against the clock and one another. But, the fastest shucker isn’t always the winner! Broken shells, butchered oysters, and bloody fingers add seconds to the clock and rile up the controversy. You can really get the family moving in the Tennis Round Robin or the 5K-road race, all benefiting the shellfish cause. So, whether you’re up tasting the briny delicacies or learning how to preserve the sea, the Wellfleet Oysterfest is a fall-time treat.
