Endless Winter Fun in Ontario

Nestled on the shores of Halls Lake, just on the edge of Muskoka, Sandy Lane Resort and the surrounding Haliburton County have all the bells and whistles for an action-packed winter escape.

Move out and enjoy the winter wonderland of frozen lakes and fresh snow. If you’re looking to explore the well-groomed trails of Ontario, nearby Back Country Tours can deliver snowmobiles right to your cottage! The doorstep drop-off convenience makes traversing the endless trails of the tundra a breeze. That’s just the tip of the iceberg though, as a handful of other activities are available on the grounds.

“We have toboggans and a toboggan hill onsite that has lights on it. We have an outdoor hockey rink, cross country skis, and snowshoes onsite for people to practice with,” says owner Rob Berthelot.

With so many opportunities waiting for you, you can spend your time differently from day to day. Unpack your skates at Sandy Lane Resort on the natural outdoor skating rink and play a game of hockey, or warm up with some friendly competition indoors in the Games Room that hosts a pool table, air hockey, and more. Hot tubs are also available at select cottages where you can unwind as the snow falls in this picturesque setting.

Though there is plenty to do at Sandy Lane Resort, Haliburton County has so many activities within a short drive of the Resort which is always a refreshing change of pace. Just a half-hour away is Base Camp 35, an adventure-based business where you’ll be able to safely experience the thrill of climbing towering ice formations. Scale large ice structures with an ice axe and harnesses until you reach the summit garnering epic views as your adrenaline is pumping and your breath is steaming. There is also Winter Dance Dog Sledding for a one of a kind experience or take a look at the Wolves in the Haliburton Forest. These are only a few examples of the different activities in our surrounding area.

For a more laid-back experience, Sandy Lane Resort is located between two excellent ski slopes in Sir Sam’s Ski Area and Hidden Valley Highlands Ski Area. Slice through the fresh powder and grind on rails at Sir Sam’s terrain park or, if you’re a first-timer, enlist in Snow School at Hidden Valley to get shown the ropes of the slopes. They both offer beautiful views to enjoy as you ride up the chairlift up and on your descent down the hill.

If you are seeking a hot spot for cross country skiing, look to the trails at the nearby Frost Centre. Though the trails are narrower and consist of a few with some technical downhill sections, on the whole, they are fit for skiers of all levels.

As you can see, there seems to be no shortage of winter fun in Haliburton County. After a full day being active, return to the Sandy Lane Resort and warm up in your very own cottage. Kick your feet up, and watch some satellite television as the wood-burning fireplace crackles and puts you to sleep.
