A German Festival Done Texas Style

Stemming from a one-day “Sausage Festival” to “Wurst Week” and now “Wurstfest,” this German feast is served Texas style with all the helpings of German culture. Lauded as “the best ten days in sausage history,” Wurstfest has grown to encompass much of the town of New Braunfels.

  • November 1st-10th, 2013
  • Cost of admission from October 1st-31st is $8; November 1st-10th is $10
  • New Braunfels, Texas

On the festival grounds, whirl round the Ferris wheel for a bird’s eye view of all the other carnival rides, games, and German fun to be had. Expect to eat your fill of sausage with vendors serving up dishes all throughout the festival. And, don’t forget the beer. German, Texan, and domestic brews are all available to wash down the savory wursts. Browse the Kunsthalle for arts and crafts, try your hand at the Skat tournament, and run every last lag of the Wurst Five-Mile Run. Of course, what’s a German festival without the polka? All ten days, fill your stein to the brim and head to one of four music houses where, Alpine- and Bavarian-style entertainment will keep your toes tapping. Off the grounds, take in a show at the Circle Arts Theatre where the pun-filled, modernized version of Lewis Carroll’s classic tale, “Alice in Wurst-erland,” will have you cheering, booing, and singing along. So, dust off your dirndls, lederhosen, and silly hats for Wurstfest 2013.
